Beaumont Hospital flue replacement
Hevac Ltd, in conjunction with J V Tierney Consulting Engineers and Jones Engineering, undertook the project to replace the two existing red and white flue towers which had become a familiar landmark at Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital.
This project was part of the replacement and upgrade programme for the 3 existing steam boilers in the central boiler-house.
Careful planning was required, as it was not possible to shut down either the hospital or the heating system for the duration of the works.
To this end, Hevac Ltd along with our supplier, had to fabricate the main mast and install as much of the new flue as possible off site.
The plan entailed the demolition of one of the chimneys, replacing the existing boiler no.2 and installing a temporary flue system while boilers 1 and 3 carried the load for the hospital through the one remaining chimney. Once the new no.2 boiler was operational, boiler no. 3 was de-commissioned, leaving boilers 1 and 2 serving the hospital.
As soon as the new boiler no.3 was on site, it was all hands to the pumps with the mast installation. The access road around the hospital was closed for 2 days. On Monday 31st July 2006, the first section of the mast was lowered onto the holding down bolts outside the boiler-house. The mast had all of the lower sections of the 3 new flues attached to it.
On Tuesday 1st August, the upper section of mast was lowered onto the top of the new mast. A complete mast system, measuring 25m high 3m square complete with 3 no flue systems each measuring 650mm diameter had been delivered and erected within 36 hours.
Upon completion of the mast, the temporary flue from boiler no. 2 could be removed and the new flue installed onto the mast along with the new flue for boiler no. 3.
This enabled Jones Engineering to de-commission boiler no.1, install the new boiler no.1 and Hevac to connect the final flue with the minimum of disruption to the Hospital.
The project was completed on 31st August 2006.
